Website In A Week!

February 22, 2018 by Brian

Introducing our new website in a week service:

We can supply you with a new up to date brochure Website to showcase your Brand and Business to the world. Many companies are still using old outdated websites that have reached there best before date many years ago.

They do not meet all the requirements of most professional service Businesses in 2018.

Why does it have to be fast loading?

A website needs to be fast loading in 2018, as most people are unwilling to spend a lot of time waiting for a website to open or load on there device, a slow website is also penalised by giving your website a lower ranking in Google Search making it harder to be found in the first place.

Websites must be responsive? What does responsive mean?

Responsive means the website has to automatically adjust to the device the potential client is viewing your website on. It must adjust to all screen sizes of Desktop PC monitors, Laptops, iPads, iPhones and all other Android Tablets and Smartphone devices. In fact, figures show that in 2018 most people do the majority of there web browsing and searching not on there desktop PC or Laptop but on there Smartphone. If your current website from 2012 or older does not do this it is very bad news for your Business.

What does Search Engine Optimised (SEO) mean and why do I need it?

SEO means that the website is coded to appeal to Googles search algorithm and list your site above competitors as well as making it much more likely to be found by potential new clients in your local area that may wish to avail of your services.

Why does it have to have a company blog?

Professional services Businesses no more than ever must sell the story of there Brand to the world. Blogging helps potential new clients instantly relate to you and your Brand both personally and professionally. Blog articles on websites frequently contain important keywords relating to your services that help Google put your website in front of the correct people at the right time.

What we do for you!

We will meet with you to discuss your Brand and website needs helping you put your best foot forward online by using the best website content and by taking high-quality photographs that highlight your company’s unique selling points.

Our website technology is extremely user-friendly to use, once the website is created for you we will train you in how to update, edit or add new web pages, photographs and blog content. Along with all this, we will give you access to video tutorials on how to do everything you will need to do with the website in case you forget how to in the future.

Costs:

We believe in being fully transparent with our pricing in our experience, many Business owners have been left disappointed by website development projects in the past that ended up costing far more than was originally suggested. There is no small print, no hidden charges just honest no-nonsense pricing and brochure website product for your professional service company. The other major issue we frequently hear is that the website took far longer to complete that was promised in some cases 6 months or even longer. That is why we give you our Website in a Week promise.

Initial website design and development work (in 1 week) = €1200.

Ongoing yearly hosting, maintenance and security costs = €200 per year.

Hackers Directly Targeting Irish Professional Services Businesses And Organisations

December 12, 2017 by Brian

Ransomware Viruses are Viruses that completely encrypt or lock all the files on your Business computer in seconds accounts, documents, pictures, outlook email attachments, client contact lists, Excel Spreadsheets, bookkeeping and payroll software databases.  Hackers that gain access to your company network can install Ransomware on the network server or individual PC’s and spread via network shares between computers.

We frequently come across cases of complete negligence during our audit process of Donegal Businesses that have a DIY attitude to IT Security where the company secretary or staff member that have exaggerated there ability is the designated in-house IT “Expert” that in most cases have zero experience or any qualifications in Network or Computer Security but are known to be “Good with computers” within the company.

Some of the recent Irish Ransomware and Business computer hacking cases have included direct targeting of professional Businesses such as Law firms, Accountants, Estate Agency’s, Financial Advisor’s and Architectural firms and other similar professional organisations.  Many Businesses we see have out-dated non operational Backup systems that appear to be functioning but are not being regularly verified by a professional.  One of the Hackers favorite tricks once a company network is breached is to actually disable firewalls and covertly delete ALL Backup’s on the company’s Backup systems over a period of weeks or months before finally launching a full scale attack and Ransonware installation to force the company to pay the Ransom which can range from €1000-€100,000 depending on the amount of bitcoin requested and the current Bitcoin price which has increased from €1000 per Bitcoin a few years ago to the current price of €15,168 per Bitcoin.

Frequently many Businesses pay the Ransom and hope that the criminal’s will take the time to restore all the Data back on to the company computers over a period of weeks or months which is highly unlikely. There is a stigma attached with admitting that a company did not have proper security systems in place to protect their own Data and there client’s Data so they pay up and don’t ever talk about it for fear of loss of  faith, damage to the company’s reputation and a sense of embarrassment within the local Business community.

WHEN DISASTER STRIKES!

November 26, 2017 by Brian

After working in I.T. Support for almost 20 years I have seen pretty much every emergency disaster scenario you can possibly imagine. Many Business owners are placed under severe pressure at certain times of the working week or year, this can lead to critical mistakes being made either by themselves or there staff. Many business owners also have family’s to manage as well as there own staff, this can lead to situations where they are not running the business but the business is running them!

As the owner of two Businesses it can feel pretty stressful at times and sometimes it can feel like there is always someone lining up with there hand out looking for payment, for some business overhead or service, bills keep coming even when the work doesn’t!

Many company’s in Ireland are reluctant to spend money on yearly maintenance or upgrading there Computers, backup systems or office Tech. This is totally understandable as most businesses have had a pretty tough ride over the best part of the last decade with lots of up’s and downs. Where this ultra low spending policy falls down is when something goes suddenly wrong, there are currently a proliferation of under-maintained and aging outdated Business computers and Tech out there. Proactive maintenance is always less expensive than reacting after the fact. The thinking behind yearly maintenance is not just to save your business money in the long run, but help to prevent disaster scenarios that can severely effect both your business and business bank account. We have spotted many potentially catastrophic I.T. issues before they occurred in the course of maintaining our clients computers.

Right now your probably thinking “But I have an antivirus program installed!” It is important to remember that antivirus is just a software package that has been programmed to pick up and block known existing threats to your Business computers and Servers thus preventing serious Data Loss or office disruption. An antivirus packages does not match human intelligence in terms of coming up with creative ways to disable it or bypass it completely. What many businesses fail to realize is that they are actually up against what could only be described as a collective super intelligence of all the bad guys in the world via the Internet.

Many Ransonware viruses that can completely disable a company’s operations are created in conjunction with hundreds/thousands of other programmers all over the world who cooperate to create these extremely financially rewarding treats. Some even repackage them as a service and sell it online to other hacking groups and criminals. When you consider the entire population of the world is now over 6.7 Billion and increasing by 83 Million per year. The challenges your antivirus package and firewall face to protect your vital company and client data is to say the least huge. Nobody really knows how many cyber criminals are out there, but what we do no is that the high population poorer “third world” country’s are coming online very quickly with the proliferation of cheap smartphones, tablets and 3G Internet even in the remotest of locations, that trend is only going to increase in the coming years.

One of the most common disaster scenarios we encounter is failed hard-drives inside office computers and laptops. We do offer a Data Recovery service however due to the difficulty of the task at hand and the nature of mechanical hard-dives this process can be hit and miss and difficult to complete. The next step then is to send it away to a Data Recovery clean room/Laboratory. This can incur costs of over €2000 per hard-drive and even then the results are not guaranteed. The delays and repercussions to your business can be immense. What is important to remember is that YOU pay the bills, that includes the Data Recovery costs and also the staff wages for staff that may no longer be able to carryout there day to day work tasks and service your own clients.

In most businesses “Time is money“, how many times have you and your staff have been left hanging by your I.T. providers not being unavailable or “too busy” to call to your office when you most need them. We can help you avoid these types of situations by covering your business with our affordable Managed Services yearly maintenance plans, where we can remotely monitor your computers for treats, potential problems even before they occur, implement patch management, security checks and general office computer troubleshooting with same day response times all year round. We also include quarterly onsite checkup’s on all your I.T. systems where we visit you in person, both these services help reduce stress and anger when disaster strikes and helps let you do what you do best run and grow your business.

Ransomware via Facebook:

January 24, 2017 by Brian

Ransomware Virus Spreading Via Direct Facebook Messaging:

Cyber criminals are now spreading Ransomware viruses directly to Donegal computer users by using there Facebook messenger service. The Trojan virus is sent as an innocent looking file ending in a “.zip” file or “.svg” file extension from a known contact in your list. It can be named anything but examples such as “image_***.svg” along with messages underneath to get your attention such as “LOL”, “OMG”, “I CAN’T BELIEVE SOMEONE POSTED THIS” have been used.

What is .svg and .zip anyway?

.svg file is an graphics/image format and .zip is a format used to compress files to make them smaller more compact and quicker to send, if you receive a file like this in Facebook messenger DO NOT OPEN IT OR CLICK ON IT. If you do a Ransomware Trojan virus that will encrypt ALL the files on your computer will run on your system and automatically send it to all your contacts in your own Facebook list to do the same to there computers.

They will then try and hold you to Ransom by making you pay them anything from €100 to €10,000 to unlock your files and get you to pay via bitcoin or by other untraceable online payment transfer services.

Tip’s for setting up your new office PC

January 22, 2017 by Brian

Here at the LK IT CENTRE we have spent many years supplying and setting up new I.T. Equipment for clients all over Letterkenny and Donegal. We have been called in to resolve many disasters over the years and hope to help you avoid some of them. Before you even think about opening the box of that brand new computer. You should check out what exactly your requirements will be and checklist those in a short list.

We recommend you carryout a full system Audit of what programs you run on your old machine such as ROS, Microsoft Office and very importantly any email programs such as Microsoft Outlook. Then you need to check out what equipment you actually have plugged in to your old Desktop Computer. You may have difficulty installing some of your older equipment such as printers and various other equipment as drivers can be difficult to find for older equipment so it is best not to dismantle you old office computer until you have all this worked out. Don’t assume that it will be a simple matter of sliding in your 10 year old version of a particular software program you have been using and it will simply install on your new Windows 10 PC like it did over 10 years ago on your old Windows XP computer. All this needs to be checked verified prior to set up.

Before you even go down the road of working out your Data migration or transfer strategy we highly recommend that you backup ALL your files on your old computer externally, it is very important that you do not leave files on the old machine or fail to copy them ALL across which can frequently happen when you transfer large amounts of files and Data.

This brings us to one of the more difficult tasks your company email, this can bring up Data protection/loss legal issues if not transferred correctly or lost, as well as inconvenience for the day to day running of your business. Email Clients or programs such as Microsoft Office 2007, Microsoft Office 2010, Microsoft Office 2013 or Microsoft Office 365 can contain large amounts of important company related email, invoices or even records of discussions and correspondences with clients going back many years as well as email contacts of businesses and clients you deal with on a daily basis. You really need to know what you are doing before you even take on this task. Many Company’s in Donegal do not have a dedicated I.T. Department and ask a staff member who is supposed to be “good with computers” to do this task, this approach is best avoided it can end in tears and you are better to ask a professional to do this for you unless you have an email address such as Gmail, or Hotmail that you use for your email account.

Finally if you do not have the time or expertise on hand or are concerned about accidental loss of important company information please feel free to give us a call as we have supplied hundreds if not thousands of new computers to every type of business and in every type of Industry you can think of from Malinhead to Killybegs and every town and village in between.

Tablet computers fail to deliver reliability and incur excessive long term costs:

December 11, 2015 by Brian

tablet women

I would just like to make my clients aware that tablet’s such as iPad, Samsung Tab also including many other android devices and cheaper Chinese alternatives that have been available for the last couple of years are causing owners real on going problems and expense.

I would like to advise my clients especially in the run up to Christmas that there are many many issues and reasons not to purchase one.

Quality and reliability wise, the iPad is the best of a bad bunch. However this quality and reliability comes at a substantial cost. With some of these newer models now costing over €600.

The fundamental problem with iPad’s and other such tablets is that there screen’s are far to easy to break accidentally. We are beginning to regularly see Apple iPad’s with broken screens that are receiving there 2nd and 3rd replacement screen in under 3 years of ownership, it seems no matter how careful the owners are they still end up getting dropped or accidentally damaged.

Many of these tablet’s that return with a new screen after being repaired by other company’s also end up having secondary problems as they have not been repaired by a professional and contain many other internal components that can be easily damaged during incorrect screen removal and re-installation procedure.

If you add the substantial cost of all the replacement screens on to the initial average purchase price of around €500. You end up with a shockingly high total cost of owning such a device and far higher than the cost of owning a Laptop or Desktop computer.
Many of the cheaper iPad alternatives are simply not worth repairing as the cost of the replacement parts including repair labour can cost more than purchasing a replacement device and in many cases there is no replacement parts available, so owners get trapped in a constant and expensive replacement cycle in many cases to keep children happy who have received them as gifts at Christmas.

Many of the cheaper Chinese tablets only last a couple of weeks and we have heard reports from many clients informing us that the tablet stopped working the same day they bought them, (This is why we don’t sell them).

There are downsides to Laptop & Desktop ownership as-well however they are improving security wise and quality wise all the time. Many of the newer Laptops in particular can start and run as quick as an iPad at a much lower initial purchase price.

Laptop’s & Desktop computers are much more cost effective to repair and much more reliable many of them last much longer than tablets, some of them even up to 10 years of daily usage.

It is also easier to monitor children’s Internet usage within the home when they are using a traditional Laptop or Desktop computer, as they are usually kept in a set, stationary location for everyone in the household to use and with so many numerous new social media apps parents are struggling and finding it difficult to keep up with tablet technology and apps, never-mind monitor tablet devices and ensure that there is no Internet bullying happening via there child’s tablet app in there homes.

If you require any advice on purchasing a new computer, feel free to contact us for a free no-obligation quote or even if you just need some free advice and help.
